“It’s hot. We’re waiting for something, someone is going to arrive. It’s quiet. It’s spring, and there are birds.”
Six people describe places, atmospheres, and sounds based on audio archives of indoor spaces, which they listen to in real time as they speak (shopping mall hall, church, newsroom, etc.). From these sound references, a mental image is created that builds, unfolds, or unravels throughout the narratives. I am interested in the role of interpretation and invention, the shifts and nuances of meaning inherent in any translation activity.
