The Interpreters

HD video | 2011

“Its cry evokes an amalgam pressed into a tooth.”

– Brûlotte, 2007

This video is part of a research project focused on bird calls and songs. Based on descriptions found in ornithology guides, nine volunteers attempt to vocally interpret the sound they imagine. Each performer brings their own personal and unique rendition, according to their imagination, knowledge, and auditory memory… This polyphony for nine voices reflects the inventive nature and variations between the different interpretations.

Performers: Georges Audet, Rosalie D. Gagné, Natalie Lafortune, Milan Martineau-Ulman, Jacko Restikian, Hugo St-Onge-Paquin, Jean-Philippe Thibault, Frédérique Ulman-Gagné and Camila Vasquez
Presented at maison de la culture NDG in Montréal, at Musée de la Côte-Nord in Sept-Îles, at centre d’exposition Léo-Ayotte in Shawinigan, at L’Imagier in Gatineau
